Finding out you’re pregnant, when you’re not ready, can put you through a rollercoaster of emotions and leave you completely overwhelmed. Who can you talk to? What should you know? Where do you go? What should your next step be? Take a deep breath; we can help. If you’re considering abortion, here’s some advice.
Who can you talk to?
It can be hard to know who to turn to. It can often seem that everyone in your life has their own opinion for what to do with YOUR life. While it is important to consult with others prior to an abortion, it is your decision. The medical team at Little Way can provide you with the necessary information and answer your questions in order to empower you to make the best decision for you and your situation. Little Way has a very understanding staff and a non-judgmental atmosphere. We care about YOU and your circumstances. You are not alone.
What should you know?
As with any major decision, education is key. For instance, did you know that there are different kinds of abortion depending on how far along you are?
· Medical Abortion – A medical abortion, also known as Abortion Pill, happens during the first 10 weeks of pregnancy. This type of abortion consists of two pills. Mifepristone stops the growth of the embryo, and Misoprostol causes the uterus to expel the pregnancy.
· Surgical Abortion – Different types of surgical abortions may be performed from 6 -24 weeks depending on pregnancy dating. These procedures may be done in a single day or over a 2-day period and will involve surgical devices like suction tools, forceps, and curettes to ensure the fetus is completely removed.
· Late-Term Abortion – This procedure happens around 24 weeks of pregnancy and beyond. Medications are used to stop the heart of the fetus, and labor-inducing medications then cause the uterus to empty. Surgical abortion procedures may also be used in conjunction.
Knowing the different types of abortions is only a small piece. It is also important to discuss detailed abortion procedures, abortion risks and side effects, the importance of getting tested for STDs prior to an abortion, and information regarding other pregnancy options available to you.
Where should you go? And why?
You guessed it. We suggest coming to Little Way. We can provide you with a pregnancy test that is over 99% accurate. We also offer ultrasounds to confirm viability of your pregnancy – did you know that 20% of pregnancies end in natural miscarriage? An ultrasound can also determine exactly how far along you are. Both viability and gestation are important to know when making your plan. As you understand abortion risks, you will understand the need for sexually transmitted infection testing prior to your abortion. Little Way provides these services as well.
